Introduction.
The trauma and orthopaedic service looks after patients who may have had an accident and broken one or more bones that require fixing or immobilising in a brace or plaster.
Our service provides the rehabilitation required to help the patient get going after surgery or injury and then return home as soon as possible allowing them to return to their normal function. It also includes elective surgery such as hip or knee replacements. With this patient group we aim to follow an enhanced recovery pathway which is an evidence-based approach that helps people recover more quickly after having major surgery.
Research has shown that the earlier a person gets out of bed and starts walking after having an operation, the shorter their recovery time will be. There is often a fast turnover of patients including day cases and we also go into ICU and A&E to treat patients as required.
